Thoughtful Young Man Shares Gift of Music with All

Hearts were warmed today when a thoughtful 20-ish male driving an Isuzu Rodeo shared pulsing drumbeats and heartbeat-altering bass with other motorists stopped at the east intersection of Ontario and LaSalle streets downtown.

Mel Osterbach, a 38-year-old commodities broker, was fortunate enough to be in his Camry right next to the altruistic youth. "I gotta say, after a hard day's work," beamed Osterbach, "it was really uplifting to experience that music. And I mean 'experience,' too, because not only could I hear it, I could feel it, because it made my teeth rattle in my head." Osterbach continued, "It was just so great of that guy to think of the rest of us that way."

Leslie Montague, returning to the suburbs after a doctor's appointment, was equally moved. "Gentle strains of melody wafted on the breeze would have been enough," she shared, "but he clearly put himself at great personal risk by playing it so loudly that it shook my rolled-up windows. He must have been bleeding from the ears. That's the type of sacrifice all of us should make for others in this post-9/11 world. That young man is truly an inspiration."

Other motorists in the area voiced similar sentiments about this event, which many say exhibited a largesse not seen since a girl in an elevator selflessly shared her Walkman music with fellow passengers. Some credited a new spirit of generosity in the country since September 11, exemplified in people's willingness to share their cell phone conversations with complete strangers and throw their still-smoking cigarette butts on the ground, just in case anyone else wants them.
